1. Standard Guided Tour: Schnipp schnapp – Das Produkt Schere

(Snip Snap – The Product Scissors)

At the Hendrichs company, more than 1,000 different types of scissors were manufactured – for paper, cloth, wire and even eggs. Children learn how scissors are forged and experience how different scissors looked 2,000 years ago.

We recommend that two guided tours be booked for groups with more than 20 participants and the group split up accordingly.

2. Standard Guided Tour: In der Scherenschlägerei (In the Scissor Hammer Workshop)

In Solingen, the drop forges were referred to as “Schlägereien” (hammer workshops). The children get to know the Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs (Drop Forge) and learn how the work processes splitting, forging, tempering and grinding are carried out. Then they can “forge” for themselves on the wooden drop hammer, re-enact the function of the forging dies (forging tools) or the cutting tools using original tools and modelling material or work on a scissor half with a file.

After the standard guided tour it is possible to take advantage of other game options free of charge subject to pre-booking:

School class 7 & groups of adolescents from 13 years of age

We also offer exciting guided tours for secondary schools and groups of adolescents.These are oriented specifically to the age of the group and their special requirements.

Subject to prior booking and in addition to the guided tours, the pupils can tours try out working on the bench vice and file their own scissor blank.

4. Standard Guided Tour: Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs (Drop Forge)

The guided tour communicates the individual steps involved in the production of scissors. Both craftsmanship and mechanised production methods are demonstrated. The tour also reveals the importance of the central power drive – steam engine or diesel motor – for the drop forge.

9. Selbstgebaut! Mit Feile, Zange und Schraubendreher.

(Self-made: With File, Pliers and Screwdriver)

A creative manual workshop for children.

The participants make useful and artistic things from scissor blanks. Following a short introduction on how to handle hammer and saw as well as a sketch on paper, the creative work begins in the historic workshops. The work is carried out in teams, each supported by a member of the museum staff. Steel scissor blanks made at the drop forge serve as the starting material. The main focus of this option is on the enjoyment of making things as a group and on skills in metal working.

Age: 8–14 years| max. 15 participants

Duration: approx. 2 hours

Price: 40 € per group plus 2 € material costs per participant
A school class can book two workshops simultaneously for a total sum of 80 €.

The LVR-Industriemuseum Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs (Drop Forge) is a partner of the KulturScouts Bergisches Land. Children in classes 5 to 10 can take part in a GPS rally in the role of detectives and uncover industrial espionage or become a forger for a day and work with the hammer themselves.
