At 16 industrial museums in North Rhine-Westphalia, the cradle of industrial culture in Germany, digital artworks, light installations and spatial interventions were created from November 2021 to April 2022. The artistic works stimulated reflection on the future of work, sustainability and the climate crisis, the influence of digitalization, and the limits of growth and consumption.
The highlight of FUTUR 21 was the four-week media art festival from March 5 to April 2, 2022. International and local media artists, designers and game developers transformed the industrial museums into temporary future laboratories. Video projections, light installations, soundscapes and interactive game courses took a visionary, utopian or critical look at the future.
The focus was on the four thematic complexes of work, energy, resources and progress. An accompanying program of workshops, performances and panels with artists and experts deepened the thematic discussion.
Some of the digital works will remain permanently in the museums. Here you will find an overview of the work.
