The Heritage Route in in Oberhausen

The EISENSTRASSE cycle route provides the unique opportunity to discover the charm of the Oberhausen industrial heritage in a sporting manner. The varied tour connects the important industrial buildings and impressively illustrates how closely urban development is linked to industrialisation in the Ruhr region.

The EISENSTRASSE links the LVR-Industriemuseum options spread throughout the urban landscape: “Heavy Industry” in the former Zinkfabrik Altenberg (Zinc Factory), Museum Platform, Peter-Behrens-Bau (Repository and Exhibition Building), Eisenheim Museum and St. Antony-Hütte (Ironworks). Clear signs indicate the path through Oberhausen’s industrial development. In addition to this main route, other town attractions such as the Gasometer and Schloss Oberhausen can easily be reached from the route.

Thanks to the Gesellschaft zur Förderung des LVR-Industriemuseums an accompanying book is available on this heritage route. It explains the roots of Oberhausen’s eventful and moving past with historic photographs, practical map material and informative explanations. In addition, as a special service for cyclists, this cycling guide book describes selected cafés and restaurants along the route. The book “Eisenstraße” is available in bookshops and in the LVR-Industriemuseum museum shop, price 7.95 €.
