Papiermühle Alte Dombach (Paper Mill)

All sites are open.

A prerequisite for visiting the LVR Industrial Museums is proof of complete vaccination or recovery or a negative Corona citizen test. Pupils with a school card from NRW are considered to have been tested. Children up to the age of 7 do not need a test.

Tuesday to Friday 10 - 17 hours
Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 11 - 18 hours
Monday closed

For school classes the museum opens at 9 o’clock on week days upon request.

The laboratory paper machine is demonstrated at the following times:

Tuesday to Friday: 11.30 hours, 13 hours 14.30 hours & 16 hours
Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 12.30 hours, 14 hours, 15.30 hours & 17 hours

It is possible to make paper at the big vat at any time. Please consult the museum staff at the site.

Easter Sunday (4.4.), Labour Day (1.5.), Ascension Day (13.5.), Whitsunday (23.5.), Whitmonday (24.5.), Corpus Christi (3.6.), German Unity Day (3.10.), All Saints’ Day (1.11.)

Closed on the following public holidays:

Good Friday (2.4.) and Easter Monday (5.4.)

Closure for Carnival:

Weiberfastnacht (Thursday before Lent) (11.2.) up to and including Shrove Tuesday (16.2.)

Annual Closure:

All LVR-Industriemuseum sites are closed from 24.12.2021 up to and including 1.1.2022.


Entrance fee for the permanent exhibition

Free entrance for everyone: 1st Friday in the month

Regular entrance fee: 5 €, reduced 4,50 € (students, severely disabled persons unemployed persons upon presentation of a welfare card or another official document), groups from 10 persons 4 € per person

Children and adolescents (up to 18 years): Entrance free

School classes (with up 2 accompanying persons): Entrance free

Refugees can visit the museums of the Landschaftsverband Rheinland free of charge. In this way the LVR wants to help refugees to familiarise themselves with the history and the culture of the Rhineland. To obtain free entrance it is necessary to show an official certificate. Entrance is also free of charge for persons accompanying the refugees (max. 2 persons per group).

The LVR-Museumskarte entitles you to free entrance to the LVR and LWL museums for one year as from the date of purchase.

Tickets for the Papiermühle Alte Dombach (Paper Mill) can be purchased at the site or in advance from our Webshop.


Audio-/ Multi-Media-Guide

We are happy to loan you an audio-guide to accompany you individually to the various stations of the exhibition.

Languages: German, German Simple Language, English, French, Dutch

Persons with a hearing impairment can make an independent tour using a multi-media guide. On the guide display a sign language interpreter explains the topics in the museum. The loan of the guide is free of charge.

Dogs in the museum

Please note that dogs are not permitted in the museum. Assistance dogs are exempt from this.

Museum Café

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 - 18.30 hours. When the weather is warm the terrace is open longer.

Driving along the A4 to exit 18: Refrath

  • After the exit drive in the direction of "Refrath".
  • After a good 1 km turn left in the direction of “Bergisch Gladbach Zentrum”, road "Vürfelser Kaule", follow this road through Refrath. The road subsequently changes its name to "Dolmanstraße".
  • In "Bergisch Gladbach, Ortsteil Gronau” keep left in the direction of "Wipperfürth, Altenberg".
  • At the next opportunity drive right in the direction of “Wippperfürth, Altenberg”, road "Hauptstraße".
  • At the next fork, keep to the right. From here follow the signs to "Rheinisches Industriemuseum Papiermühle Dombach".
  • Then follow the road straight on through the town.
  • Alte Dombach (Administration) is on the left-hand side after the traffic island. Neue Dombach (Paper machine hall, pathway to the museum entrance and parking facilities are 200 metres further on the left.

Driving along the A 4 to exit 20: Berg. Gladbach-Bensberg

  • At the first set of traffic lights drive straight on in the direction of "Herkenrath, Kürten"
  • In "Herkenrath" turn left at the first set of traffic lights.
  • At the next set of traffic lights turn left again. From here follow the signs to "Bergisch Gladbach" approx. 2 km to town sign "Bergisch Gladbach, Ortsteil Sand"
  • Take the first road to the right to "Dombach-Sander-Straße".
  • Then follows the signs to "Rheinisches Industriemuseum".
  • After a few bends in the road the entrance to the official carpark is on the left-hand side.
  • From there take the pathway to the museum approx. 300 Meter (down-stream).
  • If one drives passed the car park: In the valley at the junction "Kürtener Straße", Neue Dombach is directly opposite. Here there are a few more parking spaces. The footpath to the museum is approx. 200 m.

Driving along the A 3 to exit 24: Leverkusen

  • Continue in the direction "Bergisch Gladbach" at the set of traffic lights after the exit.
  • Follow the road in the direction of "Bergisch Gladbach".
  • After 5 km town boundary "Bergisch Gladbach, Ortsteil Schildgen".
  • Further 1 km at the traffic lights turn right in direction "Köln, Bensberg, Zentrum"
  • At the next traffic lights turn left and then drive in direction of "Bensberg, Zentrum, Stadion Paffrath”.
  • After 4 km turn right at the traffic lights in direction "A4, Gesamtverkehr, Bensberg".
  • Shortly afterwards keep left in the tunnel.
  • After the tunnel drive straight on in the direction of "Wipperfürth, Altenberg" and follow the signs to the “Rheinisches Industriemuseum Papiermühle Dombach".
  • Follow the road straight on through the town.
  • After the traffic island at Aldi etc. the Alte Dombach (Administration) is on the left-hand side.
  • After a further 200 metres Neue Dombach is on the left-hand side (Paper machine hall, parking facilities, footpath to the museum entrance).

Driving along the A 1 to exit 97: Burscheid

  • After driving off the motorway drive in the direction of "Bergisch Gladbach" (B51).
  • After approx. 1.5 km turn left in the direction of Bergisch Gladbach.
  • In Altenberg turn right in the direction of Bergisch Gladbach.
  • In Odenthal turn left at the traffic island in direction of Bergisch Gladbach.
  • In Bergisch Gladbach take the fork to the left. Follow the road "Am Mühlenberg" in direction of the signs to the “Rheinisches Industriemuseum Papiermühle Dombach" and "Ev. Krankenhaus", "Kürten".
  • At the end of the road drive left following the direction Kürten.
  • After the next traffic island Alte Dombach (Administration) is on the left-hand side.
  • 200 Metres further on Neue Dombach is located on the left-hand side. (Paper machine hall, parking facilities and footpath to museum).

Parking facilities on the Dombach-Sander-Straße

Distance on foot: between approx. 200m and 600m

Without restricted mobility

There is another car park on the Dombach-Sander-Straße (free of charge, at a distance of approx. 300 Metres). This can only be used during the opening hours of the museum.

With restricted mobility

There are two marked disabled parking spaces available on Kürtener Straße.

The distance between the bus stop and the museum is approx. 300 metres.

Arriving from the town centre:

  • Walk back to cross the road at the pedestrian traffic lights at the bus stop.
  • Walk alongside the factory hall.
  • Keep to the edge of the woods to reach the museum premises after approx. 300 metres.

Arriving from direction of Kürten:

  • Continue to walk along the road in the direction of travel.
  • The museum is located on the right-hand side after approx. 250 metres.
